OMR transformed this small cottage into a manageable retirement home in the heart of the densely populated "Old Town" historic district of Key West, FL. To open up the constricted 50' x 100' site, encroaching vegetation and a previous addition were removed to free space for a new pool and wooden deck. New plantings of palms and other native plants define the outdoor living space to form a peaceful tropical oasis.
The restored facade faithfully recalls the cottage's history, while recessed sidewalls lined with glass panels enlarge the living space into an open, flowing, and contemporary interior brightened by natural light. Clay tiles and naturally stained wood contribute to the warm and relaxing atmosphere. The finished retreat smoothly blends old and new into a unified whole that provides the conveniences of modern living within the setting's traditional contexts.
