OMR worked with New Habitat Partners on this sustainable mixed-use commercial building in Stowe, VT. 1940 Mountain Road is located along the primary access road to Stowe Mountain Resort. It contains two retail units, offices, and a spacious 5-bedroom rental apartment within all within an extremely compact footprint.
The building is the first new construction project located in a district newly rezoned to encourage a denser, "village" setting. It is next to a local trolley stop, the Stowe Bike and Recreation path, and a cross-country ski track – all of which offer transportation alternatives to driving. The site organization shields parking from the street, establishes a precedent for more pedestrian-oriented design in the district, and maximizes solar access for energy efficiency and future on-site energy production. On a sunny day, there is no need for artificial lighting and heating requirements are minimal.
